Artist Residency - Chiang Mai, Thailand
These images are from an Artist Residency at C.A.P. Studio in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I worked with the gentlemen of this studio over a week to create and proof an Intaglio Print.
After the completion of my time at C.A.P. Studio I spent a few weeks traveling and absorbing the culture and geography of Thailand - Below are some selected shots.
I spent one week at the studio creating the image, hanging out with the owner and founder of the studio Kitikong Tilokwattanotai (Kong for short) and his assistants/ printers. After I finished the intaglio plate and got it ready for printing I spent a few weeks traveling around Thailand.
Something I was very aware of while traveling was seeing the stark contrast between the old architecture and culture of Thailand standing right next to (metaphorically and physically) the new and growing culture. I also found myself as part of the new culture of booming tourism and recognizing the impacts associated with globalization both positive and negative. There was a great deal of western influence present but it was still filtered through the values of Thai culture.
It got me thinking about the vast array of cultures in the world and how they all vary in their styles of living, eating, dressing, beliefs etc. but there is the common threads that connect us all. Everyone shares the same basic emotions and basic needs. The variation comes from an adaptation to our environment. Like plants we grow out of the land we find ourselves in.
The print completed was appropriately titled “Same Soup, Different Ingredients”
